The universe gave me what I wanted.

Remember how tired I was of looking for jobs and not getting any calls back, like, at all? I think I’d applied for 35+ jobs, and only got 1 call back.

I got really sick of doing that and decided I must need some more experience. So I decided to apply for one internship that I really wanted, mainly because it’s working for a city – and any of you that follow me on twitter (& ya’ll better follow me! @add_vodka), know that I really, really want to work in the public sector.

So I applied, and also had an interview. I don’t think I blogged about this particular interview, because it happened so quickly and I was sooo busy last week.

So I went in and had my interview and they told me they would let me know this week around the middle.

Well, friends, I’m happy to announce – I GOT IT!

Once again, this is a paid internship. I got paid substantially more than my current internship, and the best part is, I’ll be working from home for the majority of the time. This cuts down on my gas and maintenance costs for my car. I’ll go in once or twice per week and work there, and then do the rest from home.

It’s also part-time, which is ideal – because they actually pay decently, I’ll be able to work about 12 hours less per week and make the same amount as I’m making now, which will therefore allow me to take full-time classes.

I’m thrilled. It’s a completely ideal situation. This gets me in the door to be able to work in the public sector after graduation. Plus I won’t ever have to see SIPJ again. Huge bonus.

I start in September, which is great cause’ I’ll be able to finish my contract with the company I’m currently working for and have a couple of much needed weeks off before I start school and work.

I couldn’t be happier.

Why didn’t I hop on the paid internship train months ago?!

So I would like to hear from you, readers. Did anybody get into their careers by doing internships? What about temp work?

  1. THAT is amazing! Congrats! I got my current job (not in my field, but whatever) by making a good impression on someone I didn’t know I needed to make a good impression on. In music we say “Everything you do is an audition”, and i LOVE that that holds true in other places in life.

Enjoy this fantastic turn of events!

  2. Yayyy!

Internships are part of the curriculum for all the various Comms streams (it’s especially important for journalism/PR majors…oh heck, all of them really). I got a part time job after mine, which eventually became FT after I graduated.

  3. Yay, congrats!! This is so exciting for you!

After my third year of my undergrad degree, I decided to take a year off. I found a temp job working for the government and, after 6 months, found a loophole in the contract. We got rid of the “middle man” and I continued working part time when I went to school and FT in the summer/holidays. After graduating, I became FT. This isn’t what I want to do with my life, but it’s pulled me through school (and beyond). Temp jobs are an easy way to get in with a company… if they like you, they’ll try their hardest to help you stay!

  4. Funny how it works out that way, a temp job lead me to a job with a travel agency which I ultimately hated being at (work was great, boss was NOT!) and in trying something totally different I landed at my current job, got back to blogging and met the guy I just moved in with…

    life is funny, huh?

  5. Congratulations! That is so exciting!

I definitely got my current job because of an internship, though it was an internship with a totally different company, and an UNPAID on at that. Gasp! I actually wrote about it recently: http://www.broketo.ca/2011/06/in-defence-of-unpaid-internships.html

A lot of the time internships get a bad rap for really taking advantage of the interns, and a lot of the time that’s the case, but there are still many great opportunities for young people out there. I totally wouldn’t be where I am today without my internship.

    • Thanks! I just read your post – I agree with it. I think that its great for experience. I do definitely feel taken advantage of, mostly because I’m doing everyones job for them. I feel like I”m babysitting. All of these people are like newborns and need constant attention. but it’s great experience and has taught me a lot!

  6. CONGRATS!

For the record, my job began as a contract. While on contract, I was able to secure an internally posted position to a full-time permanent position. And now I’ve been working ther for a little over 3 years. I’m studying my Masters in the same field. In one year I will graduate and I plan to find another position shortly.

So, to answer your question: yes. :)

  7. Congrats!

I had an internship as a graduate student that opened a lot of doors for me–experience-wise. It didn’t get me a full-time job, but the experience I got there made me a hot commodity once I started looking for a full-time job.

  8. Congrats! Sounds exciting!

I’d apply for paid internships…if I knew where/how to find them. I cannot find a single job out there, and the ones I have interviewed for end up hiring people with more experience. That’s awesome that you got out of that cycle. :)

    • I wrote a post about landing an internship at one point.

There are a few ways you can do it, some schools/companies call them co-ops. I am in the same boat as you with real jobs, though. All I have are my internships!
