Over time you really save a lot of money. A splurge I wish that I had learned earlier in life was buying a new car every couple of years. So not worth it….so not worth it. Great tips.

Interesting points. It can be difficult to gauge when to negotiate, but I think one of the best times is immediately after you’ve been offered a job, and to go for as high as you can get. Or at least bargain for other perks.

I had this conversation 2 years into my current job and it worked, but I remember the pressure I felt sitting in an office with my supervisor and one of the executives of a billion+ dollar company.

I also noticed that a higher salary made me slightly less competitive for most other similar positions. I remember having an interview later with a competitor and they couldn’t believe how much higher my current salary was than what they were planning on offering. At first they thought I was lying so during the second round, I actually brought my tax slip to show them. After that I really didn’t want the job. On the plus side, though, the higher salary made me more appealing to higher-end positions and in a niche competitor market, so that was good.

Congrats for being ahead on these. That takes a lot of discipline.
