Friday Faves_CompressedHey all! We’re back with another edition of the Friday Faves.

I know it’s not quite time to start celebrating Independence Day, aka The 4th of July, but I’m seriously ready. This is one of my favorite holidays of the year.

Every year I enjoy spending the day with my family and friends, shooting off fireworks, eating juicy watermelon, and being appreciative of the independence that we tend to take for granted most of the time. So when you celebrate the holiday next weekend, be sure to take some time to think about the sacrifice that so many people had to make for us to be able to enjoy our freedom every single day!

Ok, enough of that. It was getting a little deep, haha.

As always, here are our favorite posts from around the web the last couple of weeks:

3 Reasons it Makes Sense to Spend More – Wise Dollar – In this post, John tells us why it’s ok to spend a bit more instead of always opting for the cheapest option when you are buying something.

Making Money with What You Already Have – Savvy Scot – Pauline gives some creative ideas to help you earn some money off of things you already own. A little extra money is never a bad thing after all. 🙂

How to Plan the Perfect Staycation – Shoeaholicnomore – Guest blogger Chonce tells us why a Staycation is just as good as a vacation. She also gives some great tips on how to plan the perfect staycation.

But HOW do They Afford It? – NZ Muse – This post questions how people around us, like the Joneses, are actually able to afford the habits they have, in this case it’s going out to eat everyday. I think this is a question we all want answered!

The 1 Way to Get Out of Debt – Blonde and Balanced – This girl’s got it down to a perfect science – it’s all about your mentality. Amen! You have to believe you can get out of debt, and then start making the necessary changes to get there. Getting out of debt is also very mentally challenging at times.

Bonus Post:

Sometimes I Just Don’t Care – Budgets are Sexy – Like always, J$ tells it like it is. I think all bloggers go through periods when they feel uninspired and instead of posting nothing or posting something that felt forced, J$ took a day to just post about something else besides money. How refreshing!

4 Common Money Mistakes Made by New College Grads (And How to Avoid Them) – Wealth Gospel – In this post, Kayla shares some of the most common mistakes new college grads make with they enter the working world and what can be done to avoid them.

2 Reasons Why I Don’t Carry Cash Envelopes – Budget Ease – There are lots of good reasons to carry around envelopes of cash, like for budgeting purposes. But here are 2 reasons why you might not want to anymore.

That’s it for this week. We hope you have an excellent weekend and an even better Independence Day holiday next week!

Friday Faves_CompressedSomehow we are already almost halfway through 2015. Say what?!

Yes, it’s true. The year is nearly half over and it’s really started to feel like it to me. Although I haven’t accomplished everything I wanted to have done by this point in the year, I still feel that I have a good reason to celebrate: it’s summer!

Along with amazing weather and fun outdoor activities, summer also brings us into wedding season.

Wedding season is the focus of this week’s Friday Faves.

Having a wedding during the traditional wedding season isn’t cheap, but these bloggers have brought us some great posts filled with lots of information to help us have classy, yet frugal, weddings.

How to Save Thousands on an Engagement Ring – Making Sense of Cents – In this post, Michelle shares how much you should really spend on an engagement ring, along with some tips to help you save money while shopping for the perfect ring.

How to Throw a Frugal Bridal Shower – Budget Blonde – Before the big day, the bridal shower is one of the main events. The shower gives the bride’s family and friends an opportunity to shower her with gifts to help her celebrate her upcoming wedding and prepare for setting up her own, new family home.

How to Make Wedding Invitations – Blonde and Balanced – This post gives some great ideas to help you get started making your own wedding invitations. Making your own invites is a great way to save money and get the exact look you want to make your day special.

Mini-Vacation Financials: Wedding in Kansas – Evolving PF – Not only does getting married cost a lot, attending a wedding as a guest can also be quite costly. This post outlines what one blogger spent to attend a recent wedding.

The True Cost of Being a Bridesmaid – Kat Script – Similarly to the post above, this post by new blogger, Kat, details what it costs to be involved in a friend’s wedding as a bridesmaid. Hint: it’s usually not cheap!

Our Personal Finance Work:

Aaron and I aren’t slackers. :) Both of us are constantly working and writing for a variety of websites about personal finance. Here are just a few places you can find some of our latest works.

0% on Purchases Credit Cards – Aaron reminds us about the fine print and recommends some good 0% interest credit cards that are available right now.

How Soon Can You Get a Mortgage After Foreclosure – In this post, Aaron talks about what happens after you go through a foreclosure and how quickly you can obtain a new mortgage.

Is it Easier to Save Half Your Income When You Are Single? – Frugal Portland – In this post I embrace the advantages of being single and explore if it’s easier to save money while you are singe vs. when you are married.

How to Balance Health and Wealth – Fit is the New Poor – While Michelle was busy on maternity leave (taking care of her daughter in the NICU), I guest posted to tell her readers about how I manage to balance my health and wealth priorities.

That’s all for this week. We hope you have an excellent weekend!

Has it started to feel like Summer in your neck of the woods yet?

It actually has been pretty cool, mild, and damp in my hometown. We haven’t had this much rain in I don’t know how long. I’m hoping the sun will come out soon and the plants will green up and get to growing. I can’t wait to enjoy the flowers I planted by my mailbox this year!

There’s no real theme to this week’s Friday Faves, but we still have a good set of posts for you to enjoy this weekend when you are bored and want to spend some time reading about money. 🙂

We all Have Unique Financial Situations – Suburban Finance – Sarah reminds us that we all have different circumstances to deal with in life and when it comes to our finances. But that doesn’t mean we can’t all learn from each other along the way.

The Value of Time is Irreplaceable – Plunged in Debt – In this post, Catherine tells us that we all need to slow down and smell the roses now and then. Life isn’t all about work, work, work.

5 Ways to Kill Your Spending Triggers – Wise Dollar – This is a great post to review if you are having trouble sticking to your budget and keep overspending in the same areas over and over again. I need to look at this one myself, haha.

Should You Drive Your Car Until it Dies? – Frugal Rules – Staff writer, Cat, asks readers if they are of the opinion that they should drive their car until it dies. Personally, I’m in favor of getting rid of it before it strands you on the side of the road, but all know I’m not the most frugal person ever, ha!

5 Lessons I Learned in 5 Years of Blogging – Budget Blonde – First, congrats to Cat on her 5 year blogiversary! Woot! Second, there are some great lessons to be learned in this post from a seasoned vet in our community. You should definitely check it out!

Friday Faves_CompressedIt’s been 2 weeks since our last Friday Faves. Say what?! I guess time seems to fly by these days because of all the fun I’ve been having 😉

Now that it’s the end of the school year, it’s time for new high school and college graduates to celebrate and get ready to take on the world. But what many of them haven’t been told (or they haven’t listened to) is all the financial changes that come along with graduating and moving on to the next stage of life.

With that in mind, today’s Friday Faves is about about graduation!

Which is Cheaper: Buy a Computer or Build Your Own? – Clever Dude – This first one may not seem directly related to graduation, but many college-bound high school graduates ask for a computer before departing for college. Here are some things to consider if your high school graduate is in need of some new technology.

The Ceremony of Graduation – Evolving PF – Here is one blogger’s account of her recent graduation ceremony. The interesting part: it was her 4th PhD celebration!

How to Manage College Life – Blonde and Balanced – For those new high school graduates going off to college soon, here are some great tips for how to manage life as a college student.

Are Unpaid Internships Illegal? – Freedom Thirty Five Blog – For many college students and college grads without job, summer internships are getting ready to start. The unfortunate part for many is that they are unpaid internships.

5 Financial Firsts for New College Graduates – Wise Dollar – In this post, John details 5 financial things that will be changing after graduation. Are you ready for them?

How MLB is Ripping Off Dads on Father’s Day – Cash Smarter – Look here MLB fans as Aaron tells how the league is ripping off Dads this Father’s Day.

Why Putting 50% of Your Income Toward Debt is Better Than Saving It – Frugal Portland – I love Kathleen’s idea of only living on half your income and putting the rest toward savings, but in reality those of us in deb (like me) are making more progress with every dollar we put toward debt than those who are debt free and building savings.

Starting From Rock Bottom – Retire by 40 – In my first post on Retire by 40, I share my story from my rock bottom to where I am today.

That’s all for this time folks. If you have any graduation ceremonies this weekend, be sure to share all of this great financial advice with the new grads. 😉

Holy Cow! How is it already May?

One of my favorite often over-looked holidays is May Day, which is actually today.

May Day brings back some good memories from when I was a kid. One year my brother made a May Day basket for his crush and made my dad drive him across town to deliver it. Unfortunately he chickened out at the last minuted and ended up handing it to her twin brother when he answered the door bell. Good times!

Anyhow, it’s time for another edition of our Friday Faves.

This week we don’t really have a theme, but we still have some great posts for your weekend reading pleasure. Enjoy!

Do You Think About Financial Freedom? – Cash Cow Couple – This is a great post chalk full of lots of information about what financial freedom is and how you can get there.

Starting Out On Your Own Business? 4 Things Not To Do – Blonde and Balanced – As small business owners, both Aaron and I love reading posts about entrepreneurship. This is a good one to check out!

The World of a Freelance Writer – Diversified Finances – This is a great post by Michelle about what being a freelance writer is really like.

3 Ways Paying Off My Debt Taught Me to Win at Life – My Alternate Life – Sometimes we all need to read a good success story to help us stay on track with our financial goals. This one by Jordann doesn’t disappoint.

Why You Shouldn’t Throw Your Stuff Away – Frugal Rules – Tonya writes a great post in defense of keeping your stuff, even in light of the recent trend of minimalism that seems to be taking the world by storm.

That’s is for this time. We hope you have an amazing weekend!

It’s time for another edition of our Friday Faves. This week we’ve got some great posts all focused on income taxes.

It’s that time of year when all of us are finding out if we owe, if we’re getting a refund, and even better, we are planning what to change for 2015 so we can end up where we want when it comes to taxes.

We also wanted to let you know that in an effort to bring you more great content, Add Vodka is adding posts from other personal finance websites. This week we started with a post from Credit.com about how to never do your own taxes again.

Credit.com is one of our favorite sites, and we thought the taxes post was worth sharing here. We’ll be running a post each week from a personal finance site we love, so check back for a weekly look at some of the best stuff in personal finance from somewhere other than Add Vodka.

We’re also syndicating our original stories elsewhere, so you may see some of our stories at other sites you visit. A TV station in North Carolina recently picked up our story on making coffee at home and saving money.

One of the goals for Add Vodka this year under its new ownership is to increase the amount of original reporting in its posts. Not only will we bring you stories from our lives in dealing with money, but we’ll talk to other people about their finances and will get expert advice on personal finance topics we cover. We hope that using syndicated stories from other PF sites will help us meet that goal and give readers a wider range of topics.

Additonally, this week we wanted to let you know about a giveaway going on where you can win 8 bestselling books about personal finance. To find out more, check it out here.

Now on to our Friday Faves!

4 Ways to Pay Your Taxes – Clever Dude – This post tells you what to do and how to send in your money if you owe in to taxes this year.

When and Why You Should Consider Hiring a Financial Advisor – Frugal Rules – Erin’s post is a great place to start if you are considering hiring a professional to help you out with your finances.

Tax Refund – Do You Get Them? – Figuring Money Out – Here’s a great post about the refund side of things, including what you should and shouldn’t do with a tax refund.

How to Calculate Estimated Tax When You Don’t Know Your Income – Evolving PF – This a great post if you are still trying to navigate the world of paying taxes on self-employment income.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFor the fifth edition of our Friday Faves, we noticed a pattern around the personal finance blogosphere lately. A lot of posts have been centered around the need to quit trying to “keep up” with the Joneses in our lives.

In fact, we even published a post about here on Add Vodka earlier this week!

Once you finally stop trying to “keep up” all the time, you should have time and money to devote to whatever your real life and finances goals are instead of trying to impress people or follow societal norms.

Why Do You Care – The Frugal Farmer – Laurie had a great post this week where she talked about how she and her family were able to finally see the light and get away from trying to “keep up”. After they moved to the country, their vision was cleared and they were able to finally see all the detrimental effects that keeping up with the Joneses had on their family and their finances.

Fruclassity Commandment #3 Part A: Don’t Compare Yourself To Others – Fruclassity – Ruth and Laurie’s new site, Fruclassity, is all about balancing frugality with real life, or as they say “frugality for the not-so-badass” (as a reference to Mr. Money Mustache’s Badassity). Anyhow, this week Ruth took the time to explain part of the third commandment of Fruclassity in which you stop comparing yourself to others.

How I Let Go of Caring What People Think – Frugalwoods – This post isn’t quite as recent as the others, but in case you missed it, I wanted to highlight it here. It is one that recently got me thinking more about how to quit caring what others think about my outward appearance so I can make more progress with my financial goals. Frugalwoods is one of my favorite blogs as their posts always get me thinking some profound thoughts. 🙂

29 Ways to Make Money on the Side in 2015 – The Penny Hoarder – Ok, this post doesn’t exactly follow our theme this week, but it’s a good post nonetheless. Making extra money via a side hustle is a great way to help you reach your life and financial goals much quicker and this post has some great ideas to help you get started making extra money.

You’re Still Working for the Tax Man, But Relief is Soon – Daily Finance – Americans spend the first quarter (or so) of the year working just to pay their income tax bill for the year. This could be why you are feeling burned out on work right now (or is that just me?!). But don’t worry, the rest of the year the money you earn is yours.

Your Auto Insurer is Acting Like a Backseat Driver – Cheap Car Insurance – With all the technology available to help us prove our safe driving habits to auto insurance companies, many are able to see much more information than we may realize. This article shows a few ways that your insurance company might be using the data to control you and your driving habits whether you realize it or not.

My 3 Biggest Financial Mistakes – Red Debted Stepchild – Everyone makes mistakes. The key is to learn from them and move on in the future with better choices. Here are three of my biggest financial mistakes.

How to Use Coupons and Not Be a Jerk About It – Wise Dollar – I love to save money just as much as the next person, but ever since the TLC show “Extreme Couponers” came about, couponing etiquette has become much more of an issue. Here are some things to consider the next time you get ready to take in a “big haul” with your coupons.

But the time is here again and we’ve got a good round-up of posts for you this week. Over the past couple of weeks, it seems that lots of posts have been focused on what you should or shouldn’t do when quitting your job, or what you might be feeling when it’s time to take the plunge. Since I am planning to leave my full-time job in the near future (hopefully), I always find these posts interesting and I hope you do too! Here they are for your reading pleasure:

The Graceful Way to Quit a Job You Hate – The Simple Dollar – Cat tells us several different things to keep in mind when you finally give your notice at the job you hate and can’t wait to quit. No matter how much you dislike your job, you should still have some tact when you get ready to quit.

4 of the Best Career Lessons From Jobs I Hated – Girls Just Want to Have Funds – This is a great article about finding value in the career or job you’ve had even if it wasn’t the most enjoyable job ever. Even the worst jobs have some value somewhere, you just have to find it.

3 Emotions You’ll Feel When You Quit to Work for Yourself – LB and the Money Tree – Again as someone gearing up to quit my job, I can see how all of these emotions might come in to play when I finally take the plunge and give my notice. Lauren give some good insight into what she felt when she quit her job and why.

4 Things You Should Do When You Are About to Leave Your Job – Diversified Finances – Michelle is another one who has experienced quitting her job to work for herself and she has some more great advice about what you should do as the last day at your job approaches.
