Love these tips! Environment plays a huge role in how we proceed with our goals. I remember one summer when I worked and took so many college classes that I didn’t have time to spend any money. I made so much and put it all away in savings that summer. I wish I could get back to that now. In order to do so, I’d have to make some changes in my environment for sure.

Although I do believe that friends can have an influence on you, I’d like to believe that I can stay true to my sense of self no matter who I surround myself with. Obviously the studies show otherwise.

great post! I think it’s very important to change your mindset when it comes to finances. You have to keep your eye on the prize. My husband and I had a five-year-plan to buy a house, and we had $45k of debt. I’m happy to say we paid off the debt, saved up for a down payment, and just put an offer on a house last weekend! In five years!

Removing temptation is hugely important for me. Your bag of chips example is perfect–don’t set yourself up to fail! Since I have a goal to not buy any clothes in 2014, I don’t go into clothing stores at all. It seems overly simplistic, but I find that it really does work!

Totally agree. I’ve seen one too many people complain about weight, but then post pictures of all these baked goodies they are making at home. I get that it’s fun and nice to do, but man you are making it hard on yourself!! You are who you spend time with, so make sure it’s a good influence! Great post!

I completely agree that environment is VERY influential. I’ve noticed that I tend to have friends with similar goals and values anyway, but when my friend Sam and I got super pumped about finances we decided to create Fun on a Budget Blog together, and not only has it been motivating to have a friend counting on me to get my part done, it has made the process of getting out of debt more enjoyable and faster.

I totally agree with this post and the point you’re driving home. It’s very true: you can set yourself up for success if you create the right environment. It’s amazing to see how much your life changed after a move!
My friends are real go-getters and it definitely motivates me to do the same. In the same way, we’re all healthy and active people so that’s a major bonus for our overall lifestyle. I’d say we’re a bit different in our spending habits. I’m driven by my financial goals whereas quite a few of my close friends are really big into shopping/fashion. Not my scene but I can’t fault them if they’ve got the cash and love it!

I totally agree. There’s a saying “Tell me your friends, and I’ll tell you who you are”. It’s good to know that everything is being worked out in your life and you can control what environment you can be in. My mom has her own saying, “you are the company you keep.” Keep it up!
