For me, I’m really just paying for the convenience of having the cafe’ at my work prepare my morning coffee when I’m already frazzled in the mornings. However, if I’m going to be at home all day (working/relaxing), I’ll totally make my own coffee and save the time, gas, and energy to go get coffee.

I also buy my own half and half. That works out to $0.25 per day give or take, last time I ran the numbers, which yields me three cups per day, exactly what I need. You simply can’t beat that deal and it’s coffee I really enjoy.

Two factors keep me going for my daily drug (Starbucks).

First, I drink iced coffee and I have yet to be able imitate the amazing flavor I enjoy from my daily cuppa.

Second, I’m a mother of two with a full time job (that I completely hate). I have not slept through the night in 7 years. I go to work and home. I have no friends, don’t go out, don’t drink, don’t really buy much else for myself. I cut my hair like once every 2years. My coffee is actually also my “me time”. It’s the only me time I get. Those sips in my car from the coffee shop to my job give me a few minutes of peace and joy each day! To me, that’s priceless!

I’m not sad and lonely. I love my kids and my husband and we spend a lot of time together and I enjoy it. However, I get my monthly “blow money” and that’s generally what I buy. It makes me a little extra happy and so it’s worth the expense to me. You can really interject anything into your numbers (paying a cleaning person or lawn person, buying even the most basic of clothes rather than sewing your own!). It all comes down to what we are willing to live with or without, what’s important to us and in the end what each person would prefer to outsource to make their lives a little easier.

It IS important to analyze what you spend your money on, but I always find the “latte factor” equations missing the “what’s important to you” factor. What sacrifices are you willing to make? Which ones can you not live without?

I love how you break it all down and show us the true math behind how much you can save by making coffee at home instead of buying it. But those photos make me want a fancy coffee now, haha.
