richOver a lifetime, earning $1 million or more is feasible — and it’s a lot easier to get rich with a college degree in hand. Over a lifetime, a bachelor’s degree is worth an average of $2.8 million in earnings, according to a 2002 Census Bureau study.

It doesn’t exactly make someone rich when spread out over a lifespan, but it’s nice to know that graduating from college can at least make you a millionaire on paper.

To get really rich and be a multi-millionaire who enjoys their money now instead of waiting for retirement, you need to start by thinking about money differently. That’s the main lesson in the book “How Rich People Think” by Steve Siebold.

I interviewed Siebold a few years ago, and have read his book. A lot of it makes sense. His PR team recently sent me a list things that Siebold says prevent people from acquiring more money.

Here are his 10 reasons you’re not rich:

1. Middle-class beliefs about money

You could have all the potential in the world, but if you’re not seeing money for all the positive things like the freedom and opportunities it brings, and you focus on lack and limitation, you’re always going to be stuck in the middle class.

2. Hang around people who have no money

Money certainly doesn’t define the type of person you are. Some of the nicest people with the biggest hearts have no money at all.

But if your goal is to acquire more money, you have to get around people who have money and learn from them. Consciousness is contagious. It’s the same thing if you wanted to lose weight. You’d join a gym and start hanging around fit people.

3. You’re too comfortable

Most millionaires will tell you that especially in the beginning of the wealth-building process, you have to learn to operate in a state of regular uncertainty. The need for comfort, or knowing that you’re not taking a risk, will always hold you back.

If you take the plunge you have to stay strong and keep your eye on the prize. The payoff is well worth the effort.

4. Terrified of failure

If you want to succeed, you have to fail first. It’s how we learn and grow. Check your ego at the door and stop worrying about failure.

Start to see yourself as a comeback artist and learn from every missed opportunity. Failure is necessary for building massive success.

5. You believe it’s noble to be poor

There’s nothing wrong with wanting more.  Yes you should be grateful for what you have, but it’s not being greedy to strive for more.

Ambition is a natural trait among human beings and is the driving force behind every great innovation. Ambition is not a sin.  It’s a virtue. Never feel guilty about wanting more money.

6. Believe you’ll have to sacrifice your family life

Despite what you may have been led to believe, it not an either/or equation. You don’t have to choose between massive success and riches and a happy family life. In fact, use your family as a motivator to strive for bigger and better things in your life.

Imagine being able to spend as much time with your family as you like because you don’t have to worry about money.

7. Don’t think you’re smart enough to be rich

Being book smart has nothing to do with your potential to make money. The way to make money is to solve a problem.

Formal education is always a good thing, but never ending self-education will make you rich. Some of the wealthiest people in the world have very little formal education.

8. Don’t believe you deserve to be rich

The average person believes being rich is a privilege awarded only to lucky people. The truth is, in a capitalistic country, you have every right to be rich if you’re willing to create massive value for others. If you want to be rich, the first step is to believe you deserve it.

9. Lottery mentality

The masses love the lottery because deep down they believe it’s their only chance to get rich. This instills the belief that you have to be lucky to get rich. Stop relying on luck and start expecting more.

Expect to make $1 million next year. You might not make that much money, but you’ll be thinking big and in the right frame of mind to attract more money.

10. You trade time for money

Most people think the only way to make more money is to work more hours. Stop trading time for money. Start looking at making money as a non-linear process which is about finding solutions to problems.

The linear way is the obvious. The non-linear way is the nonobvious. Non-linear thinking and ideas are the way to riches.

In what ways are you not thinking like a millionaire?

I don’t know about you, but if I’m about to buy an item that I’ve had my eye on for awhile, I do a lot of research. I price compare, check out online classifieds (Craigslist), try to find alternatives, and really try to shop around. I try to do my shopping frugally.

This isn’t always possible, as sometimes the things I buy need to be tried on in a store, or are products of an impromptu shopping trip. But I try.

I love clothes and accessories. I always have and probably always will. I may be vain, but I’m not ashamed at my crazy closet, 51 dresses, and overflowing drawers. But, shopping gets expensive sometimes, so saving money is also pretty important to me.

Here are some great websites to help you get a head start on saving money on your favorite brands.

RetailMeNot – retailmenot.com

RetailMeNot is a database of electronic and paper coupon codes that can be used at almost any store. A search for Sephora brought up average savings of $11, and coupons for free samples with a purchase.

Great Canadian Rebates – greatcanadianrebates.ca

This website runs differently, in that when you buy something through the site, you get cash back. For instance, a search for Banana Republic shows that you would receive 2.5% cash back if you buy by clicking through GCR.

Zappos – zappos.com

Zappos is known for their shoes, and typically has better prices on shoes than if you buy them from other stores. They do have clothing and other items to chose from, usually at a discount.

HauteLook – hautelook.com

HauteLook was actually on Oprah; it’s a great way to save money on branded apparel and accessories, and they sometimes have high end items like Coach. You need to sign up to be privvy to the deals, and you can refer your friends and get $10 (the link up there is a referral link – feel free to sign up and buy something 😉 ).

Every day, there is a different plethora of brands and products on sale. When you put something in your cart, it holds the item for 15 minutes. I bought a pair of Puma running shoes for $30 on this website earlier.

Overstock – overstock.com

The premise behind this website is that apparently, companies that have an overstock of something sell on this website at a discounted price.

It can be hit and miss, but I do try to look for what I need here before moving onto a full-priced store.

What sites do you use to save money with online shopping?
