I have an exceptionally hard time falling asleep ALL the time. I get thinking about something, and then thoughts just swirl around in my head, and I can’t turn them off. I sometimes find it helpful to read before bed, but only if I read to the point where I’m almost falling asleep.

The one thing that helps me, though, is TV. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I almost always have to fall asleep with the TV on. (Not music.) I put on a DVD of something I’ve seen a million times before, so I’m not distracted by the plotline, turn the volume down really low and set a sleep timer on the TV. This way, I’m usually asleep within 15 minutes, whereas if I just went straight to bed, I’d probably be up tossing and turning for a couple of HOURS. Worth a try.

When I first started working my day job several years ago, I would frequently stay up and/or out until 2, 3, or even 4 in the morning, and then show up for work the next day. It didn’t work out so well.

I was recently reading through some old emails, and I found an email that I had sent to my girlfriend (now wife – she and I work for the same company) a few months after I had been hired. In the email, I basically said that I had just woken up, it was 3:30 in the afternoon, and did it even make any sense for me to come in at that point. I didn’t explain it to my girlfriend at the time, but I had stayed out pretty late the night before. Fortunately (?), I had been keeping kind of a low profile at work and my cubicle was pretty far away from other people I worked with, so there weren’t any negative repercussions.

So yeah, sleep is important.
