There has been a recent buzz about the $5 Challenge, and I was wondering how successful it is. But how could I find out the truth if I don’t practically see the feasibility of it. So, I did some research and finally came up with this concept.

As per www.oberlo.in an American spends about $5000 per month on an average. Considering that and the fact that we love spending in cash (About 30% on an average), it is safe to assume that we spend $1500 a month in cash.

That would account for almost $50 cash payments every day. So, no matter if you go to Starbucks for your morning coffee or pay the local newspaper vendor in cash, you end up having $5 in cash bills every day in your pocket.

So, every day, when you come back home just put that $5 Bill aside in a box.

Now with this simple illustration, I find that you can save up to $600 annually.

$600 saving is enough to buy an I-Phone, at least I would like to buy one.

Sounds Easy? Doesn’t it?

When you are driving at night, in bad weather or through a tunnel, you rely on your headlights to help you see. They also let other motorists see you. In short, your headlights are important components of your vehicle. Of course, like all other auto parts, they wear out. When this happens, you want to replace them quickly to stay safe and avoid a possible ticket.

Getting the Right Headlights

In most cases, when your headlight goes out the problem is the bulb. In a lot of cars, these can be replaced individually. However, in some, you need to replace the entire headlight. Finding the right replacement headlight bulbs can be a little nerve-wracking. There are so many choices that all look so similar.

Fortunately, if you are heading to AutoZone, finding the right bulbs is fairly easy. The store offers a tool to find parts using your make, model and year. Additionally, if you are in the store, the staff will help you find what you are looking for. Better yet, you can use the free VIN lookup tool that will find everything you need simply by inputting your VIN. It doesn’t get much easier.

Will They Change Your Headlights for Free?

This question is slightly complicated. The short answer is that AutoZone doesn’t officially provide a headlight change service. However, the longer answer is that some stores will change your headlights for you. Typically, they only do this on vehicles that accept replacement bulbs (as opposed to changing the full light). In many cases, they will do this free of charge.

The good news is that you don’t have to rely on AutoZone or anyone else to change your headlights for you. The process is very simple, and you can learn to do it yourself. In many cases, you don’t even need tools.

How To Replace Headlight Bulb

The exact process of changing a headlight depends on the vehicle. Consult your make and model’s service manual for specific details. However, the process is always something like the following:

  1. Open the engine bay and locate the rear of the headlight.
  2. If necessary, remove the casing behind the headlight.
  3. Remove the bulb from the holder. It likely needs to be screwed out. On some cars, you need to remove the cable first. In others, you lift the bulb out with the cable.
  4. If you lifted the cable out, remove the bulb from it.
  5. Follow these steps in reverse to put the new bulb in place. Wear gloves to avoid getting finger oils on the new bulb.

If you have sealed headlights, you can follow a similar process. However, instead of just removing the bulb, you will remove the entire old headlight.

Learn More

Changing your car headlights is very simple, especially if your model accepts replacement bulbs. Once you have learned how to do this, you can move on to other car maintenance. Much of the work you are paying a mechanic to do is easy to learn. For example, changing your oil and inspecting your vehicle can be very simple. Start learning today.

With today’s fast-food market so convenient to use, it’s hard to imagine people cooking at home. Well, they do, and most of them do it to save money. They cook their food and can make the food last weeks. Another thing about home cooking is that it’s healthier for you. Fast food is notoriously unhealthy, and cooking from home can cut down on some of that extra fat. There are drinks that you can create at home that make it cheaper than going out to your favorite social spot.

What Drinks Are Cheap and Healthy?

Well, there are a ton of shakes, mixes, and smoothies that are great that you can try. You can also order some delicious flavoured syrups from Monin. These flavoured syrups can even be used with alcohol and can be mixed with a plethora of other drink options. You will be able to create cocktails, mocktails, shakes, and smoothies to your heart’s content. Certain drinks and shakes are great for you and have a lot of health benefits. Add that to your home cooking and fat-free cooking options. Then you have a great meal. Shakes can be drunk in the morning, noon, evening, and night. The possibilities are endless with what you can do with these drink options.

How Does Eating at Home Save You Money?

You can save money long-term by eating at home. When you make all your meals homemade, they can cost a lot less. Imagine eating pizza at a restaurant. It will cost you, not including family or friends, maybe $12 with a drink, pizza, and breadsticks. Well, you can buy pizza dough, sauce, cheese, pepperoni, all your toppings, drinks, and breadsticks for $20. However, at this price, you can make a pizza and breadsticks three times. Now, if you do the math, that’s three times eating out at $12 for a total of $36, and buying at home is three pizzas and breadsticks for $20. That in itself saves you $16.

Okay, now say you want a burger. It will cost $2 to $3 for that burger and $2 for fries. At the cheapest burger place, a burger, fries, and a drink are $5 now. Eat that seven days a week—$35, right? Well, buy a box of twenty frozen patties for $16, a bag of fries for $4, and some drinks. The burgers and fries will easily last you two weeks, and if you put the price of around $25 for two weeks of food and compare it to $70 of two weeks of takeout, you’re saving $45 every other week. Now, expand that bi-weekly number over a year, and you have saved hundreds if not thousands.

How is Food Home-Cooked Healthier for You?

Well, the food that you buy at a fast-food restaurant, a cheap one, their food is frozen and preserved. Not only that, but they cook it in grease, which is notorious for blocking arteries to the heart. Add on the fact that they’re food is loaded with sodium, calories, preservatives, and other unhealthy things, you have an unhealthy eating habit. However, food cooked at home is grill cooked, oven cooked, and stovetop ready. Home cooking takes out unnecessary oil and sodium use.

Another great thing that can be used at home is air fryers, as they serve the same purpose of the fryer, but with no grease, and a low-fat option. With this, you would be healthier, save money, and look and feel better. There are fast and natural foods that can be made with little to no effort from home that is good for you, and cost-efficient. Even if you don’t know how to cook, you can find something that’s easy enough for you to cook.

With so many fast-food restaurants out there, it’s no wonder why people don’t eat at home. However, eating at home is a healthier option than eating out any day of the week. Another great thing that eating at home can do is save you a ton of money. You can easily save $90 a month by eating at home and not going out. So buy some flavoured syrups and drink mixes and cook at home. You will be looking better, feeling better, saving more, and breathing easier.

Children can add excitement to any household. Sometimes, the excitement and hecticness in the morning time may be unwelcomed. Lets face it, a morning routine with kids is hectic. It can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for parents. The main reason being, there is a lot to do and there is typically a time constraint. So how can this go any easier for us parents? Lets take a look.

Be Proactive

When you know what has to be done, get as much done beforehand as possible. I like to get a few things ready the night before after the kids go to bed. For example, I put the kids backpacks on the chairs by the door so they can grab them on the way out. I make sure that their folders and homework are where they should be. I also try to pack their lunch as much as I can. I may put some snacks in that don’t require refrigeration. I also try to pick out their outfits and lay them out. I even gather their shoes and put them next to their clothes so we don’t have to have a treasure hunt for them in the morning. I tend to even get up before the kids so I have a chance to make sure I can get my head on straight. If I wake up with the kids, I feel like it is a whirlwind. It tends to make me not feel focused and often forgetful. The more you can check off your list before they awake the better.

Food

Breakfast can be tough, especially if your kids aren’t morning people. I like to give my kids a nutritious meal to start their day so don’t want to just stick a pop tart in their mouth and call it a day. If I am on my A game I may make them some eggs or pancakes prior to them even getting up. Again, allowing them more time to sleep  which is good for everyone involved. Make sure to feed them a nice meal and drink along with their daily vitamins. The less distractions the better at the table. Don’t let them sit there with their laptops comparing apples to apples Ohio or watching their morning television on their ipads. Let them know that breakfast means business. Eat and be done.

Hygiene

The dreaded hygiene aspect of having kids! I have small children so I typically have them bathe in the evening rather than in the morning. Tooth brushing always has to happen but that is always a fight as well. The key to sanity is making things into a game or more fun for the kids so it can be done effortlessly without a struggle. Timers, or fun toothbrushes can do this for you.

As I previously mentioned, the morning routine can be stressful with children. The key to making it go smoothly is to be prepared and do what you without them. Move their little selves along so you can get to daycare, school or work in a timely manner.

So, you’ve got a few bad habits. Who doesn’t? You may think there’s nothing wrong with what you do – especially if it isn’t hurting anyone. Yet, the truth is, your life is greatly impacted by the choices you make. There are some daily habits of yours that are not only bad for your physical and mental well-being but for your wallet as well. Though they may seem small in nature, here’s a look at some bad habits that could be costing you big time.

Smoking Cigarettes

If you’ve developed a smoking habit, you should know that it’s costing you several thousand dollars per year. Not only that, smoking impairs your health resulting in the need for increased doctor’s visits, higher insurance rates, and more. You can remedy the problem by quitting this habit altogether. If that’s not an option, at the very least, switching to vaping is a more affordable option. You can purchase a vape pen, a Zamplebox vape box, and other vaping materials at a nearby smoke shop. It costs a lot less than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

Eating Unhealthy

The average American household spends a fortune each year on takeout and other unhealthy foods. These items may taste good going down, but in reality, it’s costing you a lot of money. Eating out every day or indulging in unhealthy foods is expensive by itself, but when you factor in the health issues that come from such a bad habit, the prices really go up. It’s time to make healthier food choices, swap out unhealthy snacks for better options, and create a meal plan so you can reduce how much you’re eating out.

Neglecting Home and Car Maintenance

Home and car repairs can set you back several hundred or thousand dollars – but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you learn how to take care of maintenance and smaller problems as they arise it reduces the need to visit the mechanic or hire a contractor to come and service a major repair. Set reminders, sign up for annual service contracts, or review car and appliance manuals to develop a routine for taking care of issues before they get out of hand.

Paying Bills Late

Yes, it can be difficult at times to secure the funds necessary to pay your bills in a timely fashion, but developing a habit of paying late will only hurt your pockets. Every time you pay late it not only results in a late fee and potential added interest, but it ruins your credit. A bad credit history means you pay more for everything from television services to insurance. It’s best to figure out how to pay your bills on time. Whether that means breaking it up into bi-weekly payments, setting up automatic debits, or setting a reminder.

Going to Any ATM

Sometimes you need to have cash on hand, but it is important to consider where you go to get it. ATMs that are not in your bank’s network are going to charge you a fee to access cash. Your banks may even add an extra fee too. This $2 or $4 might not seem like much, but if you take even ten trips to the ATM in a month you’re talking about $20 to $40 or more down the drain. Try to go to ATMs in your bank’s network to avoid these fees.

Buying Lottery Tickets

Everyone would love to hit the lotto and be rich but the reality is you’re betting against some serious odds. That dollar or more you spend hoping to hit it big could be put to better use. While you may enjoy the idea of jumping in on larger prize winnings, playing the lottery every day is really a waste of money.

It’s true, everyone has some bad habits. They seem harmless enough but as you can see from above, it can harm you in a lot of different ways. If you’d like to see an increase in your finances, it is ideal for you to learn how to break bad habits such as those listed above.

talk about your finances before getting marriedMarriage is a big deal. Even though movies and pop culture make it seem as if you can just get married and not worry about anything bad ever happening, the truth is that around 50% of marriages will end in divorce.

And did you know that one of the most common reasons for divorce is finances? So instead of getting married and divorced over your financial situation (or beliefs), here’s why you need to talk about your finances before getting married.

Shows Your Money Personalities

You’ve probably heard about the spenders and savers, but there are also other money personalities. There are people who are in between a spender and a saver, who like to save money but don’t mind splurging on the things that they love and care about. There are people that are on the extreme spectrum of being a saver, and they will hoard massive amounts of money in fear. There’s even the type of people that you would consider “minimalists” in which they spend what they need to survive, and donate the rest.

While none of these personalities are necessarily bad, they can clash if they are met with someone with a completely opposite personality. If you’re a saver but your future spouse is an extreme spender, you may run into a lot of financial fights later on down the road.

When you talk about your finances before getting married, you are able to see each other’s money personality and figure out if you mesh well together.

Helps You Realize Strengths & Weaknesses

Do you find yourself scared to spend money in fear that you’ll need it one day? Does your significant other budget really well? Talking about your finances before getting married is a helps you realize both of your strengths and weaknesses.

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. But it’s important for you and your partner to know about each other’s and be able to work through it all together.

Avoid Awkward Conversations Later

What would you do if you got married before you realized your partner had $100,000 in student loans? What would you do if they didn’t plan on paying them off? For some people, this may not be a problem, but for others, this could be a huge deal. You may feel left out, or feel like your partner lied. You’ll wonder if these loans will put a damper on your savings or retirement. You might just be plain mad about it.

When you talk about your finances before getting married, you’re saving yourself the time and awkwardness of finding out the “secrets” that your partner may be keeping from you.

Allows You To Get On The Same Page

If you talk about your finances before getting married, you’re getting everything out in the open. This allows you and your partner the opportunity to get on the same page. Some couples like to combine finances, some don’t, and neither are wrong. But when you and your significant other can come to an agreement and know what is expected of you both, you’re able to go into marriage a lot more confident in your finances.

Keeps You From Taking Things Too Far

You should never base the happiness of your relationship on money alone. However, If you’ve talked about your finances with your partner and realize that you two aren’t compatible with each other, you can take that chance to end your relationship before getting too serious. No one wants to be left in a house they can’t afford. No one wants their credit score to drop and have debt up to their eyeballs because of a divorce.

When you talk about your finances before getting married, you’re giving each other the opportunity to walk away NOW. Before things get too serious and finances become intertwined.

It’s important to talk about your finances before getting married. It can save a lot of hassle and keep you from fighting over menial finance problems in the future. Talking about money doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, it should be one of the most important things to talk about before tying the knot.

Bill GatesYou often hear not to keep up with the Joneses in the personal finance community. While it’s best not to try to keep up with the people who are broke and flaunting it, what should you do instead? I suggest keeping up with the Gateses — Bill Gates.

Who is Bill Gates?

Bill and Melinda Gates are widely known, but the Gateses could also be anyone who has built wealth in smart ways, saves for a rainy day, and doesn’t flaunt their debt.

So, how can you become a Gates? Well, there are quite a few things you can do.

Invest in Education

Everyone who knows of Bill Gates’ story knows that he dropped out of Harvard University. However, he has recommended on several occasions that investing in your education is important.

This isn’t to say that you have to get into massive student loan debt. But it does mean to take some classes to learn new skills, get a degree if you can do so debt free, or even just practicing something new.

Why is investing in education so important? Think about it. If you have more marketable skills, chances are that you are more likely to get hired for a job or be able to have a few side hustles to earn extra cash.

Your skills don’t have to be over the top, but knowing things like coding, project management, or even social media can really give you a leg up on the competition.

It’s OK To Splurge (If You Can Afford It)

If you Google Bill Gates, you will see a man who has a rather boring wardrobe, and who doesn’t seem to eat out much. However, you may be surprised to know that Bill Gates drives a Porsche (several in fact) and owns a home that cost him approximately $60 million to build.

While I certainly wouldn’t recommend building a $60 million home, Bill Gates shows that it’s OK to splurge on items and adventures that you enjoy, as long as you can afford them. Bill Gates is worth $85.5 billion, and yet he only splurges where he feels his money can go the farthest.

Simplify

As stated above, Bill Gates only splurges on things that he deems important. If it’s not important, he either won’t buy it, or he will give it up.

For example, while Bill Gates does have a private jet, he has one for a very good reason. Because of his foundation, and the immense amount of travel he and his team do on a regular basis, he is actually saving money by having his own jet.

Not only is he able to save time and energy by flying his own plane, but he doesn’t have to worry about paying for multiple tickets multiple times throughout the year.

Because of his foundation, and the immense amount of travel he and his team do on a regular basis, he is actually saving money by having his own jet. Not only is he able to save time and energy by flying his own plane, but he doesn’t have to worry about paying for multiple tickets multiple times throughout the year.

Also, Bill Gates keeps his home tidy and in order, and everything has its place. You won’t find clutter in the home, which means he knows exactly where everything is at all times. Try taking it from him, and keep your home minimalistic, simple, and clean. No more wasting money on something you didn’t need because you couldn’t remember where it was!

Know How to Invest

Bill Gates is very smart with his money. He not only invests in stocks, but he invests his money into businesses that he knows will give him a return on his money. Although he has taken a few gambles (like investing in “clean” meat), he keeps his portfolio fairly conservative.

You don’t have to be a billionaire to start investing like Bill Gates. In fact, you can invest with just a few pennies, or with a few dollars from each paycheck. Just stay smart with the companies you invest in, and trust your gut.

While keeping up with the Joneses may make you broke, keeping up with the Gateses can help you save more money, enjoy your life, and still build wealth. Which would you rather have?

apartment living easierSometimes apartment living isn’t fun. Your place may seem overpriced, thin walled, or maybe even super small. But apartment living doesn’t have to suck.

In fact, you can make your apartment feel more like home with a few tricks and save money too. Here are a few tips to make apartment living easier.

Befriend Your Landlord

It’s a smart move to be friendly with your landlord. Not only will this make apartment living easier, but if you ever have a huge emergency, your landlord is likely to put you as a priority. It’s not right for landlords to treat their tenants in a certain way, but it happens.

You don’t have to invite your landlord over for dinner every night, but being polite and letting them know you appreciate them goes a long way. Also, always pay your bills on time and try to be the best tenant you can be. A happy landlord is an easy going landlord.

Know Your Rights

Even if you’re friendly with your landlord, it is still important to know your rights as a renter. For one, make sure you read your rental contract multiple times before signing and ask questions if you have them. You should never sign something that you aren’t sure about.

Knowing your rights makes apartment living easier because you won’t have to worry about your possessions and space. For example, unless it says so in your contract, no one should be able to enter your apartment without your permission. This helps you feel more comfortable knowing that your landlord or maintenance man can’t enter without your say.

Your apartment may not be a permanent living solution, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it like home. And no home should ever make you feel unsafe.

Get an Alarm System

You may feel safer knowing your rights, but you should also invest in an alarm system! It doesn’t even have to be anything fancy. There are a ton of alarm systems that make loud noises and scare off intruders without you having to pay a monthly monitoring fee.

Now, you’ll never have to worry about leaving your apartment and belongings without being secure.

Add Simple Upgrades

Just because you live in an apartment, doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade it to your liking! Add a few shelves for storage, repaint (if allowed), and add a new shower head with all the fixings.

Changing a few things to fit your lifestyle will make apartment living easier, and will keep you from feeling deprived from simple luxuries.

Make Apartment Living Easier with Energy Fixtures

No one likes high energy bills. You may get stuck with an older apartment that has energy draining appliances and light fixtures, but you can easily fix that! For lights, you can always replace the old bulbs with LED bulbs. This may cost a little bit up front, but it will save you money in the long run and make apartment living easier.

If you have an old AC or furnace, try investing in a small heater or fans. These could help keep you cool or warm, and will also help you keep bills lower throughout the year.

Use Your Space Wisely

Using your space wisely comes in handy no matter the size of your apartment! If you plan to shop online, online furniture stores provide dimensions for all their furniture so you can determine the size that works for your space. You don’t want to walk around bumping into furniture or not be able to entertain due to clutter.

You can always add extra storage, buy a slightly smaller sofa, and even skip that extra dresser if you have a bigger closet.

apartment living easierMake it Homey

It can get lonely living in an apartment by yourself or away from family. If you are feeling a little homesick, make apartment living easier by making it feel like home! This could mean adding a few sentimental items, decorating your room like your room at home, or just adding pieces that remind you of your daily routines.

If you want to make bigger changes to your apartment (like installing a TV mount), make sure you have the permission to do so. While Netflix and cuddling seem like fun, it won’t be if you lose your security deposit for holes in the wall.

Create Rules (If You Have Roommates)

If you are going to be or live with roommates, have a set of rules that all need to follow! This will make apartment living easier because everyone will be held to the same standard. Nothing is worse than watching your food go missing or having an unwelcomed guest sleeping in your bed (it happens). Simple rules in a contract that everyone signs will help put everyone at ease.

Solve the Washer/Dryer Dilemma

Having to drag all of your clothes to a laundromat isn’t fun. Neither is using machines that are old, dingy, and most likely filthy. If you don’t have a washer/dryer in your apartment, buying portable ones will make apartment living easier!

There are so many different options to choose from, including automatic or manual options, all the way to a combo portable washer and dryer. Whatever you choose, make sure it works best for you!

While apartment living may not be for everyone, that doesn’t mean it has to suck. These tips will make apartment living easier and make it feel a little more like home.

organic produceOur earth has more than 400,000 species of plants recorded so far.  All this green around us has hidden treasures within them. Not all but many of these herbs contain medicinal properties. Humans have exploited these nature’s gifts for a very long time. We have found evidence suggesting use of herbs form the very humble beginnings of human life.

Interestingly it’s not just us humans who seem to have found benefits from Mother Nature’s bounty. You could get some good examples of how humans have put to use this knowledge to build nootropic supplements at http://www.smartpillguide.org. Some animals also seem to have an innate capacity to use plants for their therapeutic properties. It is not known for sure how these animals tend to self medicate themselves but examples are plenty. Many carnivores, apes, bear and dear are known to self medicate themselves mostly to get rid of parasites, ease intestinal distress or aid digestion.

Being the most advanced cognitive race, humans have mastered the use of herbs and we continue to explore the wide possibilities in nature. But are there herbs that could really enhance cognition? The answer is ‘YES’. Some of the most well-known herbs with nootropic properties are Ginseng, Gotu Kola, Green tea etc.

Ashwagandha, Romsemary, Sage etc are other herbs which have nootropic properties like the herbs mentioned above. What if we can take all the good stuff from all these herbs and put it in a capsule form. This is exactly what nootropic supplements are about. They have natural potent chemicals which function to make you think better, live better and feel better. So if you find following the pure herbal path for better brain function a little time consuming and less appealing to your taste buds. You could always grab a nootropic supplement like Optimind.

Although Optimind reviews are pretty convincing with a strong back up of positive reviews from customers, we recommend consulting a health care provider before you decide upon the nootropic supplement.  This energy supplement also claims to have no side effects reported.

You will find all information related to similar health supplements including side effects, results and even the ingredients on web. We strongly suggest that you learn about your pill before you begin using it, for your own safety.

negotiate your salaryThis is the first of two posts by Ryan Bonaparte on how to negotiate your salary.

Most pieces of advice about starting a career generally focus on the basics of putting together an awesome resume, utilizing your powerful network to get your foot in the door, and landing that critical interview to secure your dream position.

These steps are extremely important, both at the beginning and at any transition point during your career. Without them, you’re basically just throwing your resume into a void, never to get a call back.

What is often left out, however, is the incredible financial benefit of negotiating your first and subsequent salaries.

While it may not feel like it, especially when you receive your first job offer with seemingly little to offer to a prospective employer in return, you are in a position of power in the negotiation process to negotiate your salary. The employer has decided that above all other candidates, you are the best fit. Don’t forget that fact.

After (and only after) an offer has been presented, in nearly every case, a negotiation for a higher salary is expected. So much so, that often the first salary offered is reduced specifically to fall within the range that the company has decided for that position after a negotiation.

Start to negotiate your salary at 10%

If your counter-offer as you negotiate your salary is reasonable (except in extreme circumstances, I wouldn’t ask for more than 10 percent more than what was offered), the worst that will happen is your prospective employer will say they can’t meet that. After countless hours of recruiting, throwing out a perfectly good candidate because they asked for a little more money is extremely unlikely.

Following a negotiation, a few extra thousand dollars that year will feel great, but the true benefit of negotiating a higher salary really starts to appear as your career progresses.

Do the math

Let’s look at a little math and see how this truly plays out. If you were to start off with an annual salary of $45K and received 3 percent annual raises every year, and were promoted with a 5 percent raise on your fifth year, you would be making just under $60K by the end of your 10th year. Not too shabby.

However, if you negotiated a 5 percent higher salary to start, that first year salary would have been $47K and the final year would be up at almost $63K. Even better.

Here’s where things get interesting. Over the course of those 10 years, you would have made over $25K more from that first negotiation, than if you didn’t negotiate at all. On top of that, if you choose to move to a different company, your starting salary there will often be based on your previous salary. So when you negotiate that offer, you’ll see an even greater return.

For just a few minutes of your time, you could earn an additional $25K over 10 years. If you’re able to get more than 5 percent during your negotiation, that number grows very quickly.

I know it can be a little uncomfortable the first time you try to negotiate your salary with the potential boss/hiring manager/HR of a company that you don’t even work for. However, it really is a pretty standard practice, and you stand to leave a large amount of money on the table if you don’t. That’s money that could kickstart a plan to save or to get out of debt.
