Best Mixed Drinks You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

This is a guest post

Okay so, this blog is called Add Vodka for a reason. It’s a little-known fact that when you add vodka to anything in life you’re probably going to have a little more fun, am I right? I kid. But seriously, everything in moderation.

Everybody likes a nice late-night martini here and there, right? But how many of you can say that you’ve had a Dr. Vodka?

In all honesty, I’m not a huge drinker. Don’t get me wrong, I love my wine on the weekends or a cocktail with dinner, but sometimes it’s nice to experiment!

The following uncommon drinks are all fantastic. I will say this, however: if you make any of these drinks at your place when new friends are over, you are obligated to refer them to this blog. Just sayin ; )

1. Coffee–Vodka

Ingredients:

2 cups of water

1/2 cup of coffee of your choice

2 cups of sugar

2 drops of vanilla extract or one half of a minced vanilla bean

1 1/2 cups of vodka

Boil the water and sugar until it is mixed together very well. You can do this in a small pan. Prepare your coffee of choice and add it to the mix.

Next, mix your vanilla with the vodka. Allow your water and sugar mixture to cool until it is a syrup and then mix your vanilla vodka and syrup together. Place in a Mason jar and leave it in the fridge. You want to shake this mixture up every day for a couple of weeks allowing it to age.

Finally, you’ll strain this mixture through a coffee filter over another mason jar. All you need to do is wrap a rubber band around the coffee filter at the top of the Mason jar and pour slowly.

You can serve this on ice or straight up in a martini glass. Be careful though, because the caffeine in the coffee makes this mixture pretty powerful!

2: Dr. Vodka

This one is simple. All you need to do is combine 1 ounce of vodka with 2 ounces of Dr. Pepper. If you want the carbonation to remain I would avoid serving this on the rocks and simply serve it chilled. Dr. Pepper is an uncommon mixer but it is much better than Coca-Cola in my opinion (hint, hint sponsors!)

3. Super Vodka Slushy

Ingredients:

1 cup of sugar

5 cups of water

12 ounces of frozen lemonade

12 ounces of frozen orange juice

2 cups of pineapple juice

2 cups of vodka

Combine the water and sugar in a pot and bring it to a boil. Add all of the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Cover the pot and place it in the fridge for 3 days. When it’s time to serve simply scoop the slushy out with an ice cream scoop or a small coffee mug and place it in cocktail glasses. The next step is optional: pour just a little bit of 7Up or Sprite over-the-top. Serve with a straw or spoon. Be careful of brain freeze!

4: Vodka Daisy!!!

Ingredients:

2 ounces of vodka

1 ounce of lemon

1/2 teaspoon of sugar

1/2 teaspoon of grenadine

Put all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice cubes (make sure it is only half full). Shake it up and pour it into tall glass. If you’re feeling really daring add just a little bit of orange juice on the top and serve on the rocks.

  1. Yum, will have to try the vodka slushy! Yesterday I had Champagne “soup”, a mix of Cointreau, cane sugar, lemon and bubbly (don’t waste good Champagne, a sparkling wine will do). Pretty good!

  2. If it wasn’t 6:30 AM, I may try some of these right now! I hope that Holly doesn’t get a hold of this article or she may be drinking vodka coffees for the rest of her life:)

  3. I have all sorts of weird drinks all the time because one of my good friends is the regional Skyy Vodka rep, so he is always showing me new drinks with his products (more than just Vodka!).

A quick way to up a Dr Vodka is to use vanilla vodka (vanilla Dr. Pepper is amazing)!

  4. Dr. Vodka sounds pretty easy to make. I should try that some time. Vodka can be mixed in so many ways :0) I also like milk and vodka with a little bit of honey.

  5. I could totally go for a coffee-vodka right about now… work would be so much better that way 😉
Perhaps I will bust some of these out at thanksgiving.
Was this post inspired by that article on the Globe and Mail, that is 110% pretentious?!

  6. Vodka Daisy…that one sounds good!

Coffee vodka? Not sure I’m sold on that one. Have you ever had coffee brandy? Blech

  7. Cute list.
I tired Dr. Vodka, and for someone who doesn’t like the taste of Dr. Pepper, I really liked the drink.
Will have to try the others though.

  8. I wish I could remember how to make my obscure drink: a Blue Motorcycle. My bro and I were disc jockeys and got a bar and nightclub industry mag. They always had these awesome drink recipes for bartenders. We loved this one except for two things: it gave you one hell of a hangover AND you usually ended up doing something really stupid that night. So, after a few tries, we retired the Blue Motorcycle due to bad behavior (but a great tasting drink….).

  9. One of my favorite drinks to have when friends are over is a Flaming Dr. Pepper, which, while it contains no Dr. Pepper, actually tastes pretty similar.

    1) Pour about 6 oz of light beer into a pint glass (so that the glass is 1/3 to 1/2 full).
    2) Fill a shot glass nearly all the way with amaretto.
    3) Top the shot glass off with a little bit of Bacardi 151.
    4) Light the shot on fire.
    5) Carefully drop the shot glass into the pint glass (making sure the flame is extinguished) and drink quickly.

    It’s delicious.

  10. I really like Bloody Caesars, a Bloody Mary but with clamato juice instead of tomato juice. They are popular here but when I lived in the South, nobody had ever heard of them.

  11. Mmm. That vodka coffee sounds divinely enticing. Is it bad to want to indulge in that recipe before noon? 😀
(Bookmarking this for all these fabulous recipes, tee hee.)
