How My Life Has Changed in 2013
December filled up fast in my calendar, giving me little time to reflect upon 2013 and plan for 2014. My days were filled with work, and my evenings were filled with spending time with friends and family in preparation for the holidays. I scheduled some time, this morning, to reflect upon 2013 and all that was accomplished (or not). With the launch of Suburban Finance, and the every day pressures of being a young, busy professional, sometimes scheduled time is the only time I get.
I think about the goals that I set at the beginning of 2013; to lose ten pounds (check), to travel more (check), and to make $15,000 in side income (check). I think about how I reached these goals without a lot of effort, and my mind wanders.
I look outside and, against all odds, the drizzle that usually falls from the sky is replaced with fluffy white snowflakes, giving us hope for a white Christmas. My stomach is in knots as I brush off my car in anticipation of my treacherous morning commute.
I take my dogs out while my car warms up; they are unsure of the cold, wet substance beneath their feet, but they do their business quickly so they can snuggle into their soft, warm beds again. Absentmindedly, as I wait for them to relieve themselves, I ball up a piece of snow into a snowball and throw it at the fence.
I think about how much my life has changed since just a year ago.
The ring on my finger presses up against the inside of my glove, reminding me that I need to send out invitations for our upcoming nuptials. I don’t know anything about paper types and our trip to Michael’s last weekend did nothing to clear it up.
The downstairs door slams and I peer around the corner of the house. I wave to my brother as he goes off to work. Seeing him reminds me that we need to replace a lightbulb in his suite.
I knock the snow off of my wellies before entering our first home; a big upgrade from the flea-infested apartment we lived in while we were saving money for our down payment. I shut off the lights and close my Macbook, giving the dogs one last cuddle before making my way down to my car, which is truly only mine.
I watch a woman, in her own car, sliding sideways down my un-plowed street (lower mainlanders have no need for snow tires, 99% of the time), and resign myself to being very late for work.
My commute has shortened substantially. I haven’t blogged about it, but I was transferred to a smaller worksite at the end of the summer when a team member transferred. I was supposed to be filling in the gaps but it looks as if I will be there permanently.
My life has changed so much in the past year, and I expect that it will change a lot in 2014, as well. 2013 was not without it’s frustrations and challenges, but my hope is that 2014, as the 3-4 years leading up to it, sees tremendous progress and growth, which will outweigh the struggles.
Happy New Year!
I’m guilty of this too, but don’t discredit the hard work you put in to reach your goals, lady. You’ve lost some sleep and worked many extra hours to make that extra money, which then helped you travel more as well as nest in your new home. Thank you for sharing, so eloquently, how your life changed in 2013. I can’t wait to see what 2014 holds for you. 🙂
Haha, that’s probably true. I probably just don’t feel like I put in that much effort because I got used to the momentum. Thanks for reading (and sharing!) Cait.
I love this post! I’ve already written a 2014 goals post, but I haven’t taken the time to truly examine just how much my life has changed in 2013. I need to do that – I feel like I’d be overwhelmed with gratitude for all I have and how far I’ve come, as well as even more excitement over the possibilities the new year could hold. Hope you and yours have a very Happy New Year, Daisy!
Thanks, Kali. I love reflecting on past years. I don’t know if this is because I’m young, but it seems like every year is a HUGE year for me! I highly recommend doing it.
Sounds like you’ve accomplished a lot this year. Nice job on your health and side income goals 🙂 I have a feeling 2014 will continue to be an eventful time for you, especially with the wedding and everything. Happy New Year 🙂
Oh it will be eventful, all right! I hope you had a great 2013 too!
Happy new year! It’s always nice to see what you’ve achieved. Here’s to an awesome and stress-free wedding.
Happy New Year, E! Sounds like you guys had a great wedding in 2013, so I should take some pages out of your book 😉
Sounds like it’s be a productive year! Don’t sell yourself short though-those goals took a lot of work! Congrats on your accomplishments and may they continue in 2014!
Thank you! And thanks for reading. I definitely should “own” my accomplishments more. I realize that now!
My life changed a ton too this year!! It’s nice to see how far you’ve come. Best wishes for more awesomeness in the new year. Happy new year!! 🙂
What was the biggest change for you, Fig? Happy new year to you, too!
Looks like you did have a wonderful 2013. Hope you will still have the same or more achievements this 2014. Happy New Year to you!
Thanks Connor – happy new year to you, too.
Isn’t it interesting how some years are quiet and not a lot happens and other years are transformative in ways you least expected?
It’s bizarre! The last few years have been SO eventful for me.
You’ve done so much in the past year! I hope 2014 is just as prosperous.
Hoping that the goal progress and good changes have outweighed the struggles. 2013 was a pretty good year for me in terms of goals, but there are always things I wish that I could have done differently. That’s what keeps me motivated to keep on plugging away. Happy New Year!
